I was born in Chicago and was raised in a small town in Western Colorado. I was educated at small country high schools in Colorado and South Australia and graduated from the University of Denver, with a degree in history and political science. After that, I studied in England for three years and have a law degree from Oxford University.
After returning to the US, I was a legislative staff member in the United States Senate for eleven years and served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Economic Policy for the U.S. Department of Commerce. A long career in the media industry followed, and today I am an international television consultant for major telecommunications companies.
I began gardening at the age of nine and have gone on doing so for nearly half a century. This blog is not a present-day gardening diary, though it is written in the present tense for stylistic reasons. Rather, it is a garden memoir about years of gardening on a beautiful property in the mid-Atlantic region. There, an established, mature garden surrounds a beautiful old Arts & Crafts style bungalow in a small, historic, pre-Revolutionary War town, where I lived with my wife, two children and our dog. This is the story of that garden, considered in retrospect both in its exterior and in its interior aspects, of that house, of that gardener and of those days. It combines gardening theory and practice, with nostalgia and occasional reflections on how gardening helps us to lead good lives and be better people. The motto of The Garden Interior is “ Qui plantavit florebit ” (“He who has planted, will flourish”), and from this seed of truth it has grown.
