West Papua is eve be the part of the conflict between Indonesia and Dutch. That conflict has been going on for more than 3 centuries since the arrival around the 16th century to the middle of 20th century. During that period there were many lives lost and make the property destroyed. To end this conflict, The United Nations in August 1945 held the Round Table Conference and we must know origin of the morning star flag.
Round Table Conference
From the conference, there was a decision that Indonesia has recognition of sovereignty as the Indonesian State by The Dutch over the entire territory of the former Dutch East Indies. Not only that, by that conference, it was agreed that the West Papua as the part of the territory of Dutch East Indies will be discussed and resolved in a year after the recognition of sovereignty.
Time to time the problems regarding West Papua have not finished. The Dutch always refused when invited to the negotiation and discussion about the issue of West Papua. There are various diplomatic methods were carried out by The Indonesian Government so that the Dutch want liberate West Papua, but that did not work. This problem was not solved until 1969 when there were some armed incidents and make The Dutch Government want to surrender.
The Struggle To Liberate West Papua
As we know that The Indonesian heroes are never want to give up to seize the freedom for our country. Like the other regions in the Dutch East Indies, West Papua was a Dutch colony. However, in the agreement to hand over the sovereignty to the state of Indonesia, West Papua has not been included as an Indonesian territory. According to the Round Table Conference, this issue will only be discussed one year after the sovereignty. In its development, The Dutch did not want to surrender the West Papua. Because of that conditions, so Indonesia government made some diplomacy and armed confrontation to seize West Papua from Dutch.
As a country who love peace-loving, Indonesia wants the surrender of West Papua to be carried out peacefully through the diplomacy or negotiations. Since 1950, Indonesia was invited the Dutch to start the negotiation the issue about West Papua. In 1950, Indonesia and Dutch join the committee to finish the conflict in West Papua, but unfortunately, that committee was failed to reach the agreement. The Dutch government and the parliamentary approval put the West Papua into the territory of the Kingdom of The Netherlands in 1952. This condition automatically brings up the strong protest from the Indonesian people.
The Indonesian government also continues to look for support from another country in the world. One of the ways to get the support is through the Asian Africa Conference. In that conference in Bandung 1955, Indonesia gets the support from some countries such as Pakistan, Burma, and Sri Lanka and rejected all of the forms of colonization.
The Indonesian government diplomacy effort gets the deadlock. It was made the Indonesian government decided to also take the armed confrontation. In that time, the Indonesian government made the policy and followed by military preparations. The Indonesian government decided to buy weapons fro, Russia. Indonesia also made approached with some countries such as Thailand, Australia, Pakistan, India, Germany, Britain, and France with the aim that they will not support The Dutch if the war really took place between Indonesia and Dutch.
In accordance with the New York Agreement in 1969 showed unanimously that the people of West Papua want to remain part of the Republic of Indonesia. The results of the act were brought by the United Nations. West Papua officially became the 26th province in Indonesia in January 2000.
